Which of these apps do you actually need?
Fewer than you think. US charging is split across several operators, each with its own app, account and payment method, and roaming between them is far less developed here than in Europe. What you install depends on where you drive, not on which app is best.
A useful way to think about it is three layers. A map that shows every charger regardless of operator, so you can see what actually exists near you. The network apps for the operators you use, because those start a charge and take payment. And a route planner, which earns its place once you drive beyond your car's range in a day.
Most drivers settle on one map, one or two network apps, and a planner they open a few times a year. If you charge at home overnight — how most US EV owners with a garage or driveway charge — you may open these only when you travel.
Before anything else: which plug do you have?
The United States is midway through a connector change, and it decides which apps are even useful to you. The industry is moving to NACS, the connector Tesla designed, and away from CCS1. Newer vehicles increasingly ship with NACS from the factory; most cars already on the road have CCS1 and reach Superchargers through an adapter.
Two adapters exist and they are not interchangeable. A NACS-to-CCS1 adapter lets a CCS1 car use a Supercharger — the one most non-Tesla drivers need today. A CCS1-to-NACS adapter lets a NACS car use a CCS1 station such as Electrify America. Which you need depends on your car's port, not on its badge, and it is worth confirming before you plan a trip around any particular network.
Maps and planning
PlugShare
The closest thing to a complete map of US charging. It lists stations from every operator on one map, including free Level 2 chargers at hotels, libraries and municipal lots that appear in no network's own app. Its real value is the check-in history: drivers report when a stall works or fails, which matters particularly on the networks with patchier reliability records. It does not start charges on most networks — it is the map you look at first, not the app you pay with.
A Better Route Planner (ABRP)
Plans a long drive around charging stops rather than distance alone. Enter your vehicle and it estimates consumption from speed, elevation, temperature and load, then tells you where to stop and for how long. It matters more in the US than in most markets simply because of the distances involved, and because elevation and winter temperatures across the mountain states move real-world range a long way from the EPA figure.

Charging networks
Tesla
The Tesla app manages a Tesla and gives access to Superchargers — the largest, best-covered and generally most reliable fast network in the country. Most other brands can now use it too, natively with a NACS port or through an adapter with CCS1. If you install one network app, this is usually the one.
Electrify America
The largest non-Tesla fast network, concentrated on interstate corridors and at large retail sites, typically with several high-power stalls per location. Reliability is its long-standing criticism, so it pays to check recent PlugShare comments before depending on a particular site.
EVgo
Urban rather than highway: supermarkets, shopping centers and parking structures. That makes it the more useful network for charging while doing something else, and especially for drivers without a plug at home.
ChargePoint
Worth understanding because it works differently. ChargePoint largely does not own the stations carrying its name — it provides the hardware and payment system for the businesses, employers and cities that do. That is why two ChargePoint stations can charge completely different prices, and why some are free. Much of the country's workplace and destination charging runs through it.
Blink and Shell Recharge
Smaller networks worth having only if they cover somewhere you actually go. Blink turns up at apartment buildings, workplaces and municipal lots; Shell Recharge puts fast charging at fuel retail sites, where the restrooms and food matter more on a long stop than the last few kilowatts.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need an account with every charging network?
Not usually, though the US is worse for this than Europe because roaming agreements between operators are limited. Most stations now accept a contactless card, which covers a network you will use once on a trip. Accounts are worth having for the operators you use regularly, since they generally give better rates, charge history, and the ability to start a session from your phone when the card reader fails. Two accounts covers most people.
Which app should I install first?
PlugShare, because it shows what actually exists near you across every operator, including free Level 2 chargers that no network app lists. Once you know which stations you will realistically use, add those specific network apps. Installing everything before you know your charging pattern leaves you managing accounts you never open.
Can my non-Tesla EV use Superchargers?
Most likely yes, but check two things first. Your vehicle needs to be supported by Tesla's non-Tesla access program, and you need the right physical connection: nothing if your car has a NACS port, or a NACS-to-CCS1 adapter if it has CCS1. Access is managed through the Tesla app rather than your own brand's app. Since Supercharger coverage is the best in the country, this is usually the single most useful thing to sort out.
Are these apps free?
The apps are free to download. What you pay is for the electricity, at a rate set by the network operator rather than the app. A Better Route Planner is the exception worth knowing about: core planning is free, with a paid tier adding live vehicle data and more detailed options.
Why do prices vary so much between stations?
Because several different things are being priced. Hardware and grid connection costs differ enormously between a Level 2 unit and a 350 kW station. Some states allow billing per kilowatt-hour while others require billing by the minute, which changes what a slow-charging car pays for the same energy. And on platforms like ChargePoint the site owner sets the price, not the network. Always check the rate in the app before you plug in.
Do I still need these apps if I charge at home?
Less often than you would expect. With a garage or driveway and overnight charging, home covers most everyday driving and you may only open a charging app when you travel. The apps matter most for drivers without home charging and for trips beyond a single charge.
